Highlights
not going to regurgitate what other much more smart people have been saying about the new OpenAI o1 model, but here's some thoughts anyway:
- this is not more of the same, but a new way to get to a next step. Significant because the people who said progress was stalling have now been proven wrong
- instead of language, it's reasoning and STEM that this model is much better at, things many thought were not going to be possible with LLMs.
- this model aced 100% of openai's engineering candidate tests. While fun, this is also scary: we are going to have to rethink what a good engineering hire is and how to identify one. It makes less and less sense to ask a candidate to not use ai in their process: I for one want the people who can get results the fastest, that is increasingly going to be the AI-savvy smart engineers.
and most importantly: this is 1998 for consumer internet adoption (which started in NL around 94-95). You ain't seen nothing yet, the next decade is going to be wild from what I can tell!
controversial opinion time: I am liking X (former twitter if you've been living under a rock) more and more. I like seeing content I vehemently disagree with, even if it's stupid to me. It helps me form an opinion on things and to keep adjusting that opinion as things develop. For instance, I don't like a lot of the woke mind virus stuff, but the part I do agree with is that it should be much more okay to agree to disagree. Let's celebrate our diversity as human beings. critics will say "but what about the hate speech and the misinformation?". Hate speech is not okay, but it's also just a reality. I see little of it myself, and when I do I use moderation tools available to me to make it go away. The way X manages misinformation through community notes is imho great: allow the misinformation, but clearly tag it with community notes. It makes me aware of things that aren't what they seem to be.
