Democrats in California passed a bill on Wednesday that allows illegal immigrants to be eligible for a housing program where they could receive an interest-free loan worth up to $150,000 for a home purchase. No wonder they call it "The Left Coast".

The legislation makes illegal immigrants eligible for California’s Home Purchase Assistance Program, which allows some first-time home buyers to get up to $150,000 in interest-free loans for a home down payment. The bill passed 53-18 in the state Assembly and 25-14 in the Senate and now heads to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk. No Republicans in the Assembly or Senate voted in favor of the proposal.

According to the legislation, no one applying for the loan can be “disqualified solely based on the applicant’s immigration status.”

Republicans argued that the bill’s passage would continue to incentivize illegal immigration and create unfair competition for American citizens struggling to buy a home.

“It’s a slap in the face to legal immigrants when we incentivize the breaking of our laws and the normalizing of being in this country unlawfully,” said Assembly member Bill Essayli (R). “We need to close our border. This is a problem of our own making. We have made the borders wide open, millions of people are coming over and now the state of California is creating a huge incentive for those who came here illegally to come to California.”

The first night of the Democratic National Convention culminated with a celebration of President Joe Biden's four years in office. Biden recovered all those millions of jobs that [Donald] Trump watched slip away," Sen. Dick Durbin (D–Ill.) declared. Biden "rebuilt the economy" after the pandemic put it "flat on its back," intoned Sen. Chris Coons (D–Conn.), a longtime Biden standard bearer.   Biden himself put the cherry on top. "We've had one of the most extraordinary four years of progress ever," the president said. "We gone from economic crisis to the strongest economy in the entire world," he claimed, pointing to job creation figures, economic growth, higher wages, and "inflation down, way down, and continuing to go down."

If so, someone should probably tell Vice President Kamala Harris about all that.

Just four days ago, Harris outlined plans for gigantic government interventions in the economy, including price controls. In what was billed as the first major policy speech of her hastily assembled campaign, Harris promised to implement the "first-ever federal ban on price gouging on food and groceries" and to take other actions to empower the federal government to "bring down costs."
