How you handle your most disruptive coworker might be a sign of how much #psychologicalsafety there is.

What happens in #dialogue and deliberation when one person’s truth is another person’s trauma? How do we understand the power of strong emotion and harness it in service of mutual understanding and collaboration? How do we help people #listenup so that others will #speakup; speakup so that others will hear?’ What openings for self-regulation and co-regulation of emotion can dialogue -and facilitators of dialogue- provide? What does it take for people to feel ‘safe-enough’ to participate?

The eruption of strong negative emotion and experiences can derail deliberative processes. Formal dialogue processes, such as #training for #courageousconversations can enhance the effectiveness of deliberation where strong emotions are likely.

Hit me up for more information on Courageous Conversations - the ability to #speakup and #listenup in the moment to fuel generative and constructive dialogue.

"I wish you had contacted me before you blew the whistle" This is my repeated response to #whistleblowers who, feeling hopeless, reach out to me after #whistleblowing and who find themselves in the spin dryer of #legislation pitted against them.

So what's the alternative to #speakingup via whistleblowing? SpeakingUp and #listeningup through the #communication framework of a skilled #courageousconversation, before the ship has sunk and when there's still an appetite for reform.

One of the advantages of Courageous Conversations is that the search for solutions opens the door all the way. Everything's on the table. That gives those involved just about the best hope possible for a resolution benefitting everyone joined in the discussion.

And #hope, the principle of hope is significant here. Hopefulness is not a neutral position, it's adversarial. It's the warrior-emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Watch this 1 min video of musician Nick Cave sharing how he responds to those who reach out to him when they feel hopeless.

Live in your hope.
