My happy place is Powell's Books, America's biggest independent book store. I went last night to grab a copy of the The Atlantic and I saw harvard business review. Then Psychology Today. Then, as I walked the aisles, an avalanche of books on anxiety, stress, toxic work culture, climate despair, our shrinking attention spans. The #2 bestseller at the store is about trauma.

We are struggling. Every single one of us.

In just five years, Americans have endured:

  • a global pandemic
  • 92 climate-related billion-dollar weather events
  • a housing crisis, with the country short 3.2 million homes
  • the loss of abortion rights
  • an insurrection at our nation's Capitol
  • nearly 3,000 mass shootings
  • a major increase in hate crimes against people of color, Jews, Muslims, and members of the LGBTQI+ community

So: Be kind to your colleagues. Your boss. Your front desk admin. Your janitor. Your CEO. (Yes, your CEO). And your strategy and comms consultants.

All of us are suffering. Maybe because of a lack of autonomy or respect at work. Or because of debt or disability. Or just because the world feels so scary and fragile right now. Give some grace. Give some props. Reach out to a work friend who could use support. We're all in this together.

(P.S. Sorry about the salty titles. The publishing industry apparently is in love with the f-bomb. Aren't we all? 😀 )
