I’m honored to be supporting Dr. Paul Wortman as he gives his first BSidesLV talk in the Proving Ground! Come check out the wild Bluetooth safari action!

Taking D-Bus to Explore the Bluetooth LandscapeProving Ground, 15:00 WednesdayThis research explores the use of the Linux D-Bus as an investigative vehicle for understanding and cataloguing the Bluetooth landscape. Exploration begins with an assessment of the protocol’s basics, the topography of existing toolsets, and a determination of where/how to launch our probe of the environment. After discerning limitations and establishing initial instruments, we review the pain-points perceived along with lessons learned in development of these skills. The review of Bluetooth research ranges from scanning to discovery of devices, their enumeration, and their interaction with potential objects. Device investigations include the BLE CTF, custom made servers, and unknown devices found in the wild. The research is done using Python, the BlueZ library, and the Python dbus library.Paul Wortman

Dear random companies: please stop putting me on your listicles. When I accidentally find out I’m on a “Top [Number] Thought Leaders in Cyber [Something], usually thanks to being mentioned by a fellow “honoree,” I see that all they did was scrape my LinkedIn bio and there’s no other examination of what I have actually done in my career.

What is the point of this? Is it just to get free PR from the people you’ve listed who will presumably show their gratitude? One such listicle was clearly created by ChatGPT, as it claimed I worked at the NSA (I have not). Is it an attempt to sell more subscriptions/books?

In any case, I will not help your PR by posting or liking any of these empty gestures by marketing departments. I won’t support any recognition I have not earned.
