Highlights
Congratulations to Sarah Burton on her appointment as the new creative director of the French luxury house, GIVENCHY.
Previously, Burton was the creative director of Alexander McQueen for 13 years.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London, Burton joined McQueen and was with him from the beginning. Before leaving last year, she had spent her entire career there.
Coincidentally, Alexander McQueen was also the creative director of Givenchy from 1996 to 2001.
Following McQueen's untimely death in 2010, Burton succeeded to the head position and was a natural fit, combining his theatrical sensibilities with sharp modernity in her designs.
One of her most famous designs was Kate Middleton's 2011 wedding dress.
I was a royalist then and woke up early before work to watch the ceremony.
I remember spotting Burton in the car with Kate and squealing because that was the reveal that she was wearing McQueen. It was a well-protected secret until that moment.
Her appointment is even more significant because Burton, a wife and mother of 3 daughters, will be only one of five female creative directors at LVMH.
As I finish the biography of another great female British designer, Vivienne Westwood, a wife and mother who struggled for years to balance her career, I hope that one day, women in fashion leadership positions become less of an outlier and achievement.
With Burton at Givenchy, there is only one creative director position left to fill.
It's for a luxury house started by the most well-known female designer in fashion history, CHANEL.
We'll see who they choose.

Can you guess which pair is the "shoe of the summer" Maison Alaïa's $900 fishnet ballet flat, and which is Cider's $30 leather mesh mary jane flat?
After admiring the Alaïa pair for months, I was shocked to see an Instagram ad with the Cider flats. They were an excellent copy.
I quickly visited the Cider and Alaïa websites to compare side by side.
Again, I was surprised at how identical they are.
After close inspection, I could only spot a handful of differences, which are oblivious to the naked eye.
This is why e-commerce merchandising and styling are crucial in luxury: As a channel, it still has to deliver an elevated, exclusive customer experience.
Do you know which pair is which?
