Start of harvest of soybeans in Durazno, Uruguay. Still high humidity, but more rain to come during the weekend. Get something in before the rain and then continue harvesting until mid May (hopefully).
Seeds for winter crops (rapeseed and wheat) have already arrived. Oats and common vetch as cover crop for a sustainable rotation.

Yesterday was a long day visiting 7 farms in three different departments, Colonia, Flores and San José. The inspection had multiple objectives: · End of rental contract · Conversion of cattle land to crop field · Condition of summer crops, maize and soybeans · Acquisition of adjacent land These 7 farms are part of the leased land and are not managed by us. We reviewed the work of 6 different tenants of which 3 did an excellent job and with the other 3 we will have a conversation to learn what their experiences are.
This season we have had good rainfall, and yields look very promising. At farms we manage ourselves the estimated yields exceed the budgeted yield by far. Hopefully it will be possible to harvest without too many difficulties. Early maize is being harvested now and soybean harvest will start in three weeks.
