It's difficult to put into words the impact that Nat Jobe and Dick Glover '61 had on hundreds (if not thousands) of Woodberry boys' lives (including mine) during their combined 61 years of service to Woodberry Forest School.

We're mourning the recent loss of two Woodberry legends, both of whom were stalwarts on the faculty while I was a student.

Coach Glover was my Bengal football coach and taught me ancient history. I can vividly recall running what he referred to as a "Monster Lap" at the beginning of each football practice and the way he would burst into the classroom each day, loudly greeting us - "Good Morning, Sports Fans!" He was old school. He believed in hard work, preparation, and good sportsmanship.

Nat Jobe taught me AP US Government. To this day, I'm not sure how in the world I was allowed to take that class, but it was one of the finest classes I ever had the pleasure of taking. Mr. Jobe was a prankster and had a special way of ribbing you without making you feel bad (especially if you were from "The Mecca" or were a fan of the Tar Heels). He loved music and was responsible for helping to attract some of the best musical acts to perform at Woodberry (including the Dave Mathews Band in the early '90s). A highlight of my time with Nat was on a trip to the Supreme Court during the spring of my sixth form year where we had the opportunity to meet Justice Clarence Thomas and spend over an hour asking him questions and learning about the judicial system. Above all, Mr. Jobe was a masterful teacher. He skillfully teased information out of us (whether we wanted to engage or not) and pushed us to think deeply about our convictions and how we arrived at them.

Despite their differences in political ideologies, Coach Glover and Mr. Jobe were dear friends. Perhaps more important than anything they taught us inside the classroom or on the athletic field, they were a wonderful example of what society should look and act like - respectful, tolerable, and not willing to let political differences stand in the way of a friendship - something that we are lacking in today's society.

Coach Glover and Mr. Jobe will be forever missed, but never forgotten. When the "Mount Rushmore" of Woodberry teachers is etched in stone, there is little doubt in my mind that these two gentlemen will be included.

Today is OneWoodberry - a day for alumni, parents, and friends to come together and support the boys who are here now. For many of us, Woodberry changed our lives - developed within each of us a sense of moral integrity and intellectual thoroughness, and turned us into men who will have a positive impact on the world around us. I hope you will join us on this special day to give back to the school that has given us so much. Go Tigers!
