The windswept, green mountains of the Basque coastline on Spain’s north Atlantic feel light years away from the country’s stereotypical image of sangria, sherry and sun. Here they make a crisp, tangy white wine called Txakoli which has a slight spritz and in the height of summer goes superbly well with a cool bowl of gazpacho. For the adventurous wine lover, looking to move on from oaky Riojas and cut price Cava, these sorts of niche wines from often overlooked regions like Getariako Txakolina offer another take on Spanish wine. And they’re gaining momentum…

Like everything in our shopping basket wine prices have been steadily creeping up over the last 12 months. Latest figures for the Office of National Statistics show that the average price of a bottle of red wine has climbed 7% in the last year to £7.68. Not helped by a 20% increase in excise duty introduced in August 2023, which means we now pay £2.67 to the Exchequer on every bottle of still wine we buy - plus 20% VAT. Ouch. Given the tax burden I’m consistently impressed with the quality and value on offer on our High Street. But so accustomed are we to searching for value in the vineyards of places like Chile, Portugal and South Africa we often overlook what’s going on just over the Channel. France may produce some of the finest wines in the world but it also offers amazing value for money, just as long as you know where to look.
