Highlights
This past Tuesday I had the honor of speaking at Bisnow's State of the Market for Tarrant County. On the panel, we explored deal structure and financing strategies in today’s dynamic development climate.
A few of my goals with the project at Woodhaven is to highlight the east side of Fort Worth, the disconnect between lack of supply and perceived lack of demand, and explore how our local development community can drive meaningful growth in the area. It is crucial to push these opportunities into the spotlight and shape a prosperous future for our city as a whole, inclusive of the east side.
Thank you to Bisnow and the other panelists for a compelling discussion on the promising trajectory of Fort Worth’s development! Crescendo Development
This November marked my last month to serve on Fort Worth's Zoning Commission. I am forever grateful and humbled that mayor Betsy Price appointed me to be her zoning commissioner for district 1. Thank you for the opportunity to serve for 8 years, 11/13/13 - 11/10/21. During my tenure I was present for ALL 96 public hearings and participating in 1,588 cases!
Thank you to my wife Elizabeth Northern for her support, my mother Karen Holcomb for supporting me in my real estate endeavors and teaching me about design and historic preservation, my father John Northern for instilling an entrepreneurial spirit within me, mayor Price for creating Steer Fort Worth which got me engaged with the City, MaryAnn Means-Dufrene, MSHRM who encouraged me through Leadership Fort Worth to apply to serve on the zoning commission, my business partner Michael Crain and agents at Northern Crain Realty, and last but not least, City of Fort Worth staff for their countless hours of hard work.
Fort Worth is the 12th largest city in the nation and is evolving rapidly. I sought to be mindful of the following principals when making recommendations on zoning cases.
- Historic preservation: When it's gone, it’s gone.
- Affordable housing: Our housing stock shortage has caused housing prices to reach all time highs. Thoughtful multifamily and missing middle products can add supply, easing demand and prices, and support nearby businesses.
- Protect the commercial tax base: Preserve industrial & commercial tracts to promote a healthier top line.
- Improve aging infrastructure: Development serves as a catalyst to upgrade aging infrastructure that is desperately needed in the central city.
- Encourage TOD: Achieve efficiency and a lower environmental impact through transit oriented development.
- Preserve Open Space: Much of a cities beauty can be found in the tranquility of park space, no matter how small it may be.
