Microsoft adds a new #datacenter every week... every week! Google, Microsoft, Amazon - they're all making moves toward utilizing next-generation #nuclear power for reliable "behind-the-meter" energy, likely coming in the form of fleets of small modular reactors & microreactors. As the world seems entropically bent toward increasing volatility, #safety is top of mind. Meanwhile, these #software giants know as much as anyone about #cybersecurity. Let's hope they take a #leadership role in ensuring that new nuclear, which will rely on digital instrumentation more than any of its predecessor, becomes a #goldstandard for #cybersecurity. #climate #cleanenergy

Advanced nuclear reactors are cool & cooling 8-). The latter is why the United States and 21 other countries pledged in Dec 2023 at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai to triple nuclear energy capacity (425 GW in 2020 to 1,160 GW by 2050). This will require new formats for nuclear. Especially for your family photo's favorite future destination .... data centers! US Data centers used 13 GW in 2022 and could grow to 34 GW in 2030. This is at direct odds with US Coal Power's planned decrease (DOE: 212 GW in 2021 to 153 GW in 2035). Advanced reactors, modular in design and safer in operation than their predecessors are the logical path. Many "cool" players here at #SMR2024 Reuters Events #datacenters #future #nuclear #cop28
