For N-of-1/few treatments in rare genetic disease, while antisense oligos may be the initial therapeutic platform of choice, CRISPR holds huge promise for the future. Fyodor Urnov and Manar Zaghlula, Ph.D. from the Innovative Genomics Institute will join the N=1 Collaborative Seminar Series on Monday 8/28 at 12:30-1:30p EST to share a framework and recommendations for enabling affordable, accessible bespoke CRISPR treatments.

The event is open to all, please join us by registering at the following link: https://lnkd.in/eeDyc4cV

I'm particularly excited to moderate this discussion — not only because of my deep belief in the 'programmability' of CRISPR enabling many rare disease treatments, but because Fyodor gets to the heart of the issue: that business as usual in the private sector will leave millions worldwide with diseases "too rare to commercialize" without treatments even though the technology exists. Instead, we need to refactor regulatory, reimbursement, and clinical development frameworks in order to maximize the therapeutic impact of CRISPR, particularly for ultra rare diseases where no other options exist.

Key to this is developing a new model of open, collaborative interaction between academic investigators, clinicians, patient/caretakers, and industry—one much like what the N=1 Collaborative is dedicated to catalyzing to make individualized medicines safe and accessible to patients worldwide.

I used to say that Arbor was my baby — now 11 weeks into raising a tiny human, while the overlaps exist (e.g., the all-in dedication, round the clock work, importance of having an amazing co-founder/partner), my perspective has definitely grown. Some late night thoughts:

  • Rare disease parents and caregivers are superhuman. I cannot fathom how in caring for a sick child, they summon the energy and willpower to form non-profits, catalyze treatments, and create lasting change (even if their little one ultimately may not benefit).
  • Love is layered. It's possible to love your child so deeply, but simultaneously also feel grief (in all its stages) for the newfound loss of spontaneity, sleep, and time for yourself.
  • I've never valued my time with loved ones more.

I've been so grateful to the Arbor Biotechnologies and N=1 Collaborative teams for their bottomless support during parental leave, and the opportunity to re-center myself on why we do the work we do: the patients.

(PS thanks N1C fam for the amazing onesie and my daughter for being so stoked to model it)
