Corruption is one of the biggest concerns for developing countries. Despite constant reforms and external aid we still observe numerous economies stagnate or even falter and arguably the key reason behind this unfortunate truth is Corruption.
Last semester I took a class in Development Economics and as we delved deep into the subject I noticed this trend of corruption contributing to a lack of growth and asked my professor to point me in the direction where I could learn more, and he sent me toward a paper by Dr. Olken of MIT and Dr. Pande of Harvard, called "Corruption in Developing Countries"
This resonated with me and helped me understand answers to questions like: How prevalent is corruption?; What are the efficiency consequences of corruption?; What determines the level of corruption?
Some key points that grabbed my attention:
- Bribery in Uganda: Firms reported bribe payments of about USD 88 per worker, approximately 8% of their total costs.
- Direct Observation in Indonesia: Truck drivers paid bribes averaging USD 0.50 to 1 per payment, representing 13% of the marginal cost of a trip.
- Graft in Public Spending: In Uganda, 87% of funds intended for educational non-wage payments were lost to graft.
The study of corruption matters deeply to me. India historically and even in the present day suffers from this, and this study helped me understand some potential avenues through which we can battle this virus.
I highly recommend anyone interested in this field to go look at the paper and DM me! I am always super excited to talk about economics and policymaking.
