Highlights
I have a big milestone next month! This year will mark my 40th rotation around the sun.
I have had a few full-circle moments, which have sparked some reflection. While fully embracing the entrepreneurial life and the audacious goal of delivering a new vision for venture capital, all while being a devoted mom, I've had to focus and take a step back from my civic and philanthropic board work. Entrepreneurship can be very rewarding and involves tremendous personal sacrifice in all aspects of your life, particularly how you spend your time. And yet lately, my past affiliations with education and community-driven organizations continue to intertwine with the present. Three run-ins with my past have made me nostalgic and remind me of some of the lessons I've learned.
Through my affiliation with the Links Organization, I spearheaded the effort to raise over $70,000 for my small tuition-free all-girls middle school. Through Project 351, it's an honor to have a team of students in Massachusetts named the Yasmin Cruz Ferrine Service Team, dedicated to community service throughout the year. Most recently, I had the privilege of sharing my story on a podcast for my beloved alma mater Noble & Greenough School.
As I look back on that latchkey kid, taking the bus alone down Blue Hill Avenue at 11 years old, here's what I would tell my younger self:
Play the sport, even if you're one of the worst players on the team. Go for that run around Franklin Park; eventually, you'll run three Boston Marathons. Learning how your body and brain are connected is an invaluable life skill. Seeing things through, releasing stress, and becoming stronger will always serve you – so play field hockey and lacrosse, but definitely skip basketball.
Learn to diversify and create optionality with your revenue streams, school acceptances, and even your dating life. Failure can just be an incomplete success, so persist. Even in the darkest hours or most trying times, just put one foot in front of the other or tackle just one to three tasks that day. You'll be surprised at how consistency trumps intensity.
Don't be afraid to speak the words no one else will say or make the call that feels too hard. In life-defining moments, speak from the heart, not from talking points, and do the right thing. During your biggest transitions, lean on your faith, not your own understanding, and seek the help you need – a mentor, your tribe, a therapist, or ideally, all of the above. Don't let the pressure and eldest daughter complex fool you into not asking for support.
You’ll figure out how to turn a career in finance into your dream job. You'll find the best partner and Girl Dad to love and support you unconditionally. From the boardroom to the mainstage, as long as you fall in love with taking care of yourself, you can show up for the world in service to others and your dreams.
