Yichao Yu

PhD candidate at UCL

Yichao Yu is a neuroscientist and researcher at the Centre for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI) at University College London (UCL).12 He has been a valued member of CABI since 2011 and received his PhD in Biomedical Imaging from UCL.2 Yu's research focuses on developing novel technologies for remote and precise manipulation of brain cells, particularly astrocytes, using magnets and magnetic materials.2

Key achievements and research areas of Yichao Yu include:

  1. Developing a method called magnetomechanical stimulation (MMS) that enables selective control of astrocytes using an MRI scanner.12
  2. Leading the development of MMS technology, which exploits astrocytes' intrinsic mechanosensitivity to trigger calcium and ATP signaling.2
  3. Contributing to the development of a novel brain cancer therapy called Minimally INvasive IMage-guided Ablation (MINIMA).2

Yu received the 2022 UCL-CNT Early Career Investigator Award in Neuroimaging Techniques for his achievements in the field of magnetomechanical stimulation.1 His work has been published in prestigious scientific journals, including Advanced Science.12
