I was part of Openspace VC102 OpenHours panel, titled “Career Transitions & Navigating VC as a Woman.” and spoke alongside thoughtful folks like Alina Truhina, Ayu T., Nichapat Ark. Thank you Jaclyn Seow and Giulia Pulvirenti for the invitation, and the very meaningful programme. 👏

🤚 Programs like OpenHours are important for creating a safe space to discuss concerns and potential gender biases that women may still face in the world of PE/ VC. 🔥 It's crucial to focus on the unique value that one brings to the table, beyond being a woman (or man). Believe in your strengths and don’t get caught up in overcorrecting for gender biases. Labels like “aggressive” or “empathetic = too soft” can be stereotypical remarks for women leaders. “Aggressive” may not necessarily be a bad thing or can be normalised as more women speak up. I personally don’t mind being called that if that reflects my drive and passion. Men & women could avoid generalization and “see” the individual as who they are. 🧍♂️🧍♀️ Having allies, regardless of gender, can really help if you face discrimination. Martin Tang 邓文豪 our male ally joined as mentor of the programme as well! 🛣️ While traditional routes like consulting, IB and entrepreneurship are common pathways into VCs, there are also other ways to show your interest and build the necessary skills, like strong networks and business acumen.
