“Yuri, you’re a young man! C’mon - get your phone out, take a selfie!” said Desmond Tutu, as we rode to the venue; I snapped the blurry picture. The night prior, he excitedly showed me his hotel room key: “Yuri, look, it’s room 422 - ‘For Tutu!’”
In 2014, while at Starkey Hearing, I spent three days—most of them one-on-one—with Archbishop Tutu, receiving his personal blessing. #Archbishop was a holy man. He was also a hustler (in a good, strong, self-made way) and a global leader, who knew right from wrong and did not hesitate to set boundaries - with international leaders and with street gangs alike. I personally witnessed both.
He took the time to pray. Once, on my watch, he delayed a meeting with the U.S. Secretary of State by nearly an hour, while taking over a Hollywood celebrity’s green room, all to meditate and pray. Being in charge of the protocol, I was worried that the Archbishop might’ve suffered a medical emergency, as he was alone and not responding to me, Secret Service, or his assistants. I made the call to knock down the door. As the door came down, there he was, sitting in the armchair, calm as ever. His Grace looked up and asked, “Is it time to go?” I said, “Yes, we’re a little late.” He responded, “They can wait, God can’t. Let’s go.”
For years we’ve exchanged emails, all of which he would sign “Love, Arch.” The first one went to my junk folder, because why wouldn’t it? [From: Desmond Tutu…]
The timing of Arch’s passing is divine. He lived a long, beautiful, accomplished life, and God called him home at age 90, on a Christmas weekend. Thank you, Arch for making the world a better place, and for teaching us the lessons of #perseverance, #ethics, and #leadership. You will be forever remembered and missed.
