Now listen, I've worked on a lot of multi-layered magazine features. I don't know if I've ever been involved with one quite like WILDSAM's FUTURE OF THE ROAD package, out now in our August/September issue and live on our website. We interviewed a couple dozen leaders across several interlocking industries. Commissioned multiple conceptual illustrations that needed robust editorial briefing and super-quick execution. Staged a photo shoot that's basically set in a sci-fi world. And then we applied all the magazine-making tools in our brains and hands to bundle that work into about 16 beautiful pages.
For me, the project turned into an immersive and eye-opening short course on cool work and sharp thinking, unfolding now across the country and world. The conversations were bracing—optimistic and forward-looking, but also grounded and practical. On the page, meanwhile, we let ourselves riff at times, spinning some almost-fantastical visions alongside the more granular and factual stories. The result ... I'm biased, but I think it's editorial magic in action.

The first issue of WILDSAM Magazine has landed. I've been in this magazine/newspaper/books/putting-culture-on-paper business since approx. forever, but this is the first full-on launch I've ever worked on. As with any proper magazine that aims to make a living (not just a statement), the process is a fascinating dynamic between aesthetics and business. On the latter front, we're lucky to have a sharp and growing team of colleagues who know how to make a case for print. In the art/edit departments, I could not be prouder of the writing and design in this issue—all to articulate a concept that aims to bring a fresh take to travel and cultural journalism: a magazine dedicated to the American road trip.
That idea holds many aspirations. If I could single out one hope, it's to amplify cultural and creative renewal unfolding in every corner of this country, a grassroots revival of spirited imagination and enterprise. I believe that is a real and under-covered story, which can be told at scales grand and small.
In any case, this issue has its flaws, as any debut might. But rest assured, we are working to have many opportunities to fix them ... starting with Issue 2, which goes to press this coming week.
