Why gender inclusion matters in product marketing.

Wrote one sentence in a customer deck.

Something along the lines that included “they” — 3rd person pronoun. In my mind, the subject was gender non-binary.

But for my director reviewing that copy…

It was an aggregious error, later cited as evidence for “careless grammar mistakes” in my then-performance review. 😭

What I took from that single experience?

1️⃣ When in doubt on copy, show your thinking. I didn’t give context then. There was no comment highlighted — to justify my word choice.

Write comments to give context and justify your thinking. Let who reviews your work, see it from your point of view.

2️⃣ Break grammar rules in your writing, if it improves clarity and readability.

Did my word choice then do that?

Not really.

Again, I didn’t give any context why.

3️⃣ Don’t punish employees for writing “mistakes”.

If your a people leader, it’s your job to coach your talent. Imagine if a teacher slapped your wrist for every spelling mistake.

You and I can both agree — that’d be a bad teacher.

That’s no different in workplaces.

Don’t use mistakes to later justify performance reviews. Get immediate clarity, understand, and ask:

“What prompted this decision?”

You can’t coach what you don’t know. Demand excellence? Yes!

But create space for your direct report to grow to be excellent.

You and them both deserve that. 🙂

4️⃣ Gender inclusion matters in what we write, especially in product marketing.

Be considerate to the world we live in. Not all your customers look like you.

Because of my “careless grammar mistakes” back then — a few months later — I took my talents elsewhere, got laid off within two months, and shortly launched my own PMM consulting business.

Soo I still do break grammar rules.

But know when I do, it’s because I do it for you.
