Recently, Tina Chen, Siddhant Mehta, Miguel Fernandez and I wrote about some of the considerations and debates that went into Slack’s new design. We scrutinized nearly every piece of the app through the lens of keeping Slack focused and small, even as it can do so much more ❤️

💘 Yesterday our team started rolling out a new version of Slack!

It's designed to make certain basic things simpler, like catching up on important stuff and stashing it away for later. It also lets Slack grow its capabilities over the next few years, while still feeling small.

But — after living with this thing and honing it for the last 6 months — what's most exciting is how just plain ✨GOOD✨ it feels to use!

Neat little details are everywhere, from 🙌 Matt Spiel and Chris Delbuck’s new approach to color and vibrancy across screens, to the way Gleb Denisov slides in cloud-like previews of tabs (we call them “peeks”), to Andrew Gosine and Chris Xu's nuanced overhaul of Slack’s screenreader experience.

Thanks to Siddhant Mehta and Akshay Bakshi, the mobile and desktop experiences feel purposefully complimentary, not just designed by different people. McKenna Lowry and Jon Russell's new approach search finally make it feel effortless to find stuff around Slack. And Carla Gonzales and Brad Monroe's impressive unified notifications view delivers on the promise that Kristin Au and Pooja M. kicked off with an internal prototype called "Streamline" a few years ago. Among many other things, Emily Straubel rewrote our timestamps, so they are no longer absolutely bonkers.

These details, and so many others, reflect quite a lot of attention, sweat, and personality from all of us who worked on it, including remarkable leadership from Miguel Fernandez and Tina Chen.

There’s way more to do from here; it's never perfect. But it’s the first time Slack’s interface has felt really alive and opinionated to me in quite a few years. Really excited for everyone to get to play with it.

✌ Keep Slack Cute!
