🌟 Highlights from a thought-provoking morning at MongoDB.local with Callum Davies and Kaung Lin Oo in Marina Bay Sands:

It's always refreshing when tech events genuinely prioritize developers' needs and interests.

The GenAI talk by Sweta Dwivedi particularly stood out. What caught my attention wasn't just the tech itself, but the emphasis on what truly matters to developers - the ability to experiment rapidly and evaluate results based on practical metrics like the RAG triad and hallucination detection. It's this kind of developer-first thinking that builds confidence in using MongoDB as the backbone of your tech stack.

The keynote touched on an interesting approach to database evolution - maintaining core strengths (being a document database) while opening doors to cutting-edge use cases like real-time stream processing and being a vector database (I was surprised that MongoDB can be used as a vector database). As someone who's wrestled with legacy system modernization, I found myself nodding along to discussions about AI-assisted SQL to MQL conversion. It's a pain point many of us have felt, and it's encouraging to see it being addressed.

Beyond the presentations, it was great to meet some of the folks in the MongoDB team - they are genuinely keen to meet developers where they are and provide forward-thinking solutions.

I wrote an in-depth analysis of the CrowdStrike outage that left 8.5 million Windows devices inoperable and will potentially cause global losses of up to $15 billion. As leaders in tech, we need to understand the root cause of this outage and take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

While the incident is being painted as a black swan event, I argue that it's not entirely unpredictable. In fact, disaster recovery plans should be designed to handle mass simultaneous outages like this.

The article highlights the importance of transparency as well as the need for robust testing, canary deployments, and mechanisms to detect failures early on CrowdStrike's part, and proactive disaster recovery planning on the customer's part. I also explore the tension between features and safety, and how cybersecurity companies need to be more transparent about their safety features.
