tl;dr I'm safe, but devastated. And all I can ask for is that you stand with the people of Israel as we confront true evil.
Before I say anything else, I really appreciate all of the texts and emails checking in and sending prayers. It means a lot. I am safe at my home in Tel Aviv, where it is relatively very quiet - meaning only a few rocket attacks, which really does feel like nothing right now. But tensions are extremely high and it takes a very high emotional toll as the devastating news continues to come in.
It's hard to know what to say here that isn't already being said on social media and the news. Many of you already feel very close to this country and its people, and are following the news and are as outraged and heartbroken as I am.
For anyone who doesn't feel like they know what's going on, please take some time to watch video testimony and read the stories, and make sure the people around you are doing the same, as hard and as awful as it is. We need the world to know the atrocities that have happened here and will only continue to happen if Israel doesn't fight back. War is, sadly, entirely necessary.
There is no other way to describe Hamas's actions as anything other than barbaric, inhumane, and genocidal. It is not an exaggeration to say that this is the worst attack against Jews since the Holocaust. The major difference now is that we have the State of Israel, and an army and the ability to defend ourselves, which is a miracle in and of itself. The question now is: will the world look the other way again until it's too late? Or even worse, try to justify it? Or will you recognize the double-standards and the hatred and brutality that we face and support our self-defense?
This is not the time to engage in conversations about Israel's government policies or make arguments about moral relativism. Anyone who even slightly tries to justify the acts that took place on Saturday is contributing to the propaganda that has allowed terror organizations to grow for decades under the guise of "resistance". Hamas is not pro-Palestinian. They have never and will never work to create better lives for their population. They are Nazis, just with a different media strategy.
This is not at all to say that there aren't innocent people in Gaza caught in the crossfire, and the loss of innocent life is always tragic. But there is absolutely no equivalency here: innocents are not being targeted and mass murdered in Gaza. The destruction of infrastructure in Gaza is tactical and necessary. The diversity of narratives in this region may be complex, but the current situation is not.
I'm praying that this war is quick and effective and wipes out Hamas forever. That the more than 100 hostages are all returned to Israel, that our soldiers stay protected, and that all of those who have lost loved ones and parts of their souls have the resources they will need to cope with this incredible loss and trauma. We will survive, but we will never be the same.
