Highlights
Today we celebrated the white coat ceremony for our class of 2028! This milestones is quite precious for students and their families - and a helpful reminder for those of us knee deep in our careers. I first wore my white coat over 25 years ago and today had the privilege to speak and share thoughts about its timeless significance. I talked about the ‘social contract’ implicit in donning the white coat and the quadruple aim as a frame for the social contract. Our responsibility, as we proudly wear our white coat, is to 1/ Care for patients, get to know them and build meaningful relationships 2/ Partner with communities, know their needs and improve their collective health and resilience 3/ Be responsible stewards and team members for our health system 4/ Prioritize self care - our own physical and mental wellness are critical just as we can care for others. Looking forward to the journey ahead with the class of 2028!!

Returning back from a productive trip to Uganda and Kenya - and as always, excited about the progress in the region. At a time when there is so much suffering, it is inspiring, and I think critical, to be reminded that there are ambitious, creative & good leaders paving the way for a better tomorrow.
In Uganda I visited with CUSM research collaborators in Mbarara where we are using an implementation science approach to improve mental health and dementia care. I met with some of our research students and faculty and so impressed with their critical thinking and their drive - among the issues they are working on are screening for alcohol use, adolescent depression and caregiver burnout - global issues and they are leading the way in rural Uganda.
In Kampala I visited the new AKU Multi-specialty clinic - so so neat. It will have the country’s first EMG along with other services including cancer care, stress tests, endoscopies, dialysis and rehab.
The highlight was visiting Aga Khan University in Nairobi with Dean Abebe Bekele from University of Global Health Equity in Rwanda - we brought to life an MOU between these like-minded institutions which prioritize quality and excellence in medical education and research. We met the deans, chairs, residents and researchers. The excitement to collaborate was palpable and opportunities are abound. South-south collaborations are so important as they offer the opportunity to build sustainable local/regional capacity for innovation and excellence. Much gratitude to Dean Lukoye Atwoli for hosting us and opening doors for collaboration.
