Simple. Not easy.

My favorite Peloton Bike Bootcamp instructor, Jessica Sims said this during class this morning and I realized how fitting it was for Demand Gen too.

“Create quality content and distribute it to where your ICP audience is”

Simple concept, sure. But successfully executing it takes...

-- Deliberate research on your target accounts, and the buyers within -- Time and effort from multiple people in your org to create the actual content (copywriters, graphic designers, or managing an outside entity) -- A proper testing and posting calendar for the accompanying supplemental supporting pieces (ads, videos, employee advocacy posts, sales enablement, etc).

I wouldn’t call this “easy.”

“Provide deliberate and rigorous training to your SDRs to ensure they’re asking the right questions and properly qualifying early-stage opportunities.”

Another simple concept. Actually executing it successfully...

-- Will take time (again) -- Might result in a decrease in total opps or revenue in the short term 😱 -- A consistent and dedicated feedback loop where you better have an open mind (you might learn you’re targeting the wrong people) -- Ruffling some feathers (or creating "healthy tension" as John Short said in a recent post)

None of this is “easy.” And it goes on...

Accelerate your pipeline Increase ARR among existing accounts Do customer interviews Develop a closed lost win-back program Evaluate this new #AI tool

They’re all simple concepts, but anyone who says these are “easy” is definitely selling something.

When it comes to health and fitness the things that produce results are fairly straightforward, simple concepts. In reality though, they take hard work, sacrifice, dedication, and time to see results.

Same goes for Demand Generation. Simple ≠ Easy.

My favorite aspect of Demand Generation marketing is that it requires you to build relationships with so many entities within an organization outside of marketing.

It’s easy for marketers to get caught up in our own little worlds creating content, setting up / executing campaigns, putting together reports, building ICPs, or any other of the seemingly 900 things that fall on marketing’s plate sometimes.

Yes, it’s true that almost every marketing function interacts with sales, product, and/or customer teams to get their job done. The difference is that to build and run a successful #DemandGen program, just “working with” or having meetings with these teams isn’t enough.

Demand Gen requires you to build relationships with these teams beyond, “what’s the focus for H2 2024, Ms. Sales Leader?” It requires an ongoing, open line of communication on what the goals are, what’s being done (executed) to help reach them, and an understanding from all parties of what’s working and what’s not.

Again, I also acknowledge this is being done in other marketing functions too. But in a Deman Gen function where a strong relationship has been built, it’s much easier, and necessary for success, to go deeper and uncover WHY.

Why is this message performing better than that one? Why is pipeline stalling in stage 2? Why do we convert at a 7x higher rate when we use this channel over that channel? Why does the team feel this is the right list of target accounts?

These questions can and should come from both sides of the table. Having a strong relationship between them is going to make the conversation a lot less uncomfortable, accusatory, or awkward because you already have mutual respect and understanding of what each party is doing and where it came from - there are no surprises. In this scenario the answer to these questions doesn’t benefit or “harm” only one side, it benefits everyone involved, especially the larger organization.

A good Demand Gen marketer knows how to break down silos and build relationships. They’re quality communicators who can get sh*t done at every stage of the funnel because they know what levers to pull and buttons to push.

And if your organization is looking for a Demand Gen Leader like this, let me know - I’m available.
