It has been a tough week for all of our team at WhatsApp as we had to say Goodbyes to many amazing teammates last week. Amidst all of this, I just shared some news with our WhatsApp and India teams. It has been planned for a while, but given the events last week, we wanted to hold this back so we could focus on supporting those impacted last week. An edited version of my Meta Badge Post is below:
It's been 4 years since I joined as WhatsApp's first Country Head in India, and I'm so proud of what we have built. I'm also really excited about my next gig. I believe that the next 5 years will be transformational for India -- with many of our current pre-IPO companies very quickly becoming the global leaders in their respective sectors. After a small break, I plan to rejoin the entrepreneurial world; you’ll see announcements on that shortly!
"Hi Everyone, After four amazing years at WhatsApp, I have taken the call to move on from Meta. This decision has not been an easy one for me. WhatsApp is one of the most special products in the world, and being a small part of it has been a unique experience and privilege of a lifetime for me.
In 2019, we started with three people, no business plan, and a lot of headwinds! Four years later, I'm very proud of the strong organization that we've built in India, as well as the business results and market impact that the team has delivered. In particular, we built a team with an entrepreneurial mindset and pushed many ideas, experiments & pilots. Some failed, some went well, and a few, in my opinion, have the potential to change the country and maybe even our company.
We defined a strategic pillar called “Impact for India”, and the team’s work throughout the pandemic stands out as a shining example of how WhatsApp can drive exponential social impact. Moreover, anyone - regardless of location or economic strata - can access financial services such as banking, micro-pensions and micro-insurance, preventive and urgent medical care, government-to-citizen services, education and job skilling, and much more on WhatsApp. We brought power to NGOs and small businesses to increase their reach and impact in ways one could never have envisioned. The net result is that WhatsApp has now made a difference as a key ally to India’s social and economic goals.
On the business side, the team delivered significant revenue and volume growth in our business, we launched Payments and also helped evolve our API-based business strategy with new use cases like JioMart. The combination of the Business API on the Cloud with Payments can transform the small business economy, and I hope that the early use cases that have been lit up in India, will continue to serve as a template for many sectors within India and across the globe.
WhatsApp has the potential and opportunity to change the World. I hope that we keep our ambition and aggressiveness for impact, outsized and beyond what others think is achievable! "
It's been a big week at WhatsApp. ‘Communities on WhatsApp’ starts rolling out to users today!
Over the years we’ve seen organizations and local communities leverage WhatsApp Groups to organize themselves and share updates. Communities on WhatsApp will help make those conversations within groups much easier, efficient and more impactful.
We’re also releasing three new features – in-chat polls, 32 person video calling, and groups with up to 1024 users, all updates which will be helpful for groups and Communities.
We’re excited to have people try the new feature and hear your feedback.
