Highlights
I have spent much time recently discussing innovations in the food service sector, like mobile orders, robotics & automation, and ghost kitchens. This innovation is being driven by customer demand for more convenient food options. Therefore, I was interested to read that Chick-fil-A Restaurants just opened a multi-story, drive-thru only restaurant in Georgia. It announced that this new restaurant can handle three times as many drive-thru cars as its other restaurants. It also has lanes just for customers who order through the chain's app, helping to streamline the process to allow the restaurant to handle more orders and get food to customers faster.
The design of the restaurant allows the kitchen to be two times larger than a typical Chick-fil-A restaurant kitchen and the food conveyor system delivers a meal every six seconds, according to Chick-fil-A. The food conveyor system is an example of how the use of automation and robotics is having a growing impact on the FoodTech sector. With the food service sector struggling with labor availability, costs and turnover at the same time that restaurants face pushback from consumers over rising prices, innovation is the best strategy to strengthen their business and fight against compressed margins.

Congratulations to Arama Kukutai, Richard Smith, Dan Malech and Dana Worth on today’s announcement that Plenty®, a US vertical farming company, has formed a new venture with 7-Eleven, the premier name in the convenience-retailing industry which operates, franchises and/or licenses more than 13,000 stores in the US and Canada. This new venture will further 7-Eleven’s commitment to sustainability by offering salads featuring lettuce grown at Plenty’s Compton, CA, indoor farm in salads sold at approximately 1,300 convenience stores in California. This venture with Plenty is interesting as most consumers don’t associate 7-Eleven with fresh produce, like salads, so I will be watching to see if this relationship comes with some new branding and/or marketing by 7-Eleven. Although most sales of leafy greens produced by vertical farms and other Controlled Environmental Agriculture methods are to the retail / grocery sector, Plenty’s new venture with 7-Eleven is evidence of the huge potential in the food service sector. Another example is the partnership agreement between Square Roots, a technology leader in urban indoor farming, and Gordon Food Service, the largest family-operated food distribution company in North America, which resulted in the deployment of five co-located farms at Gordon Food Service distribution centers in the US. I expect to see an increasing amount of food service opportunities emerge for CEA companies as they increase production and start delivering larger quantities and a more diverse set of products.
