Highlights
I want to honor the memory of my late grandmother Mamie Jo (Josephine Lane). She was just no average woman and she has a lot that every entrepreneur out there can learn from. Dig deep, find your grit, that’s what Mamie Jo would do.
My grandmother found herself with 4 lovely kids at the age of 36 (My mother age 14 and my youngest uncle age 4) after her husband died suddenly of a heart attack. Rumor has it his heart exploded, and that’s another story. Needless to say Jo had a choice.
Give up, or fight.
Mamie Jo was a tough lady, she had been a nurse for coming close to 15 years at this point and had a name for herself on the 3rd floor of Sanford, NC’s hospital. Honored and appreciated (at least as far as we now know) by those who worked with her. She had respect because she made an impact on those around her.
No matter the hardships my grandmother had, she founded a family that numbered 52 direct descendants and spouses at the family gathering this past weekend. I know startups with less expansion potential! This woman’s descendants have been incredible role models to me, my mother raised my sister, brother and I and we’ve all made our little slices of positive impact. My Aunt and two Uncles all have been business leaders as well and everyone of her children have had multiple well minded and positive children of their own.
Just remember out there, when life hands you lemons, “Don’t worry be happy” make some lemonade. When my grandmother was giving my family a home while my dad pursued starting / buying a small business, we never once saw her upset, off put, inconvenienced or unhappy. She’d frequently ask me “are you Happy?”
I was sad to see these past few months as dementia ravaged her mind and took this happiness away from a lady who has never had it easy, but never known a single bad day in her life (at least not visibly) even though I know she’s had them.
She lived 92 years and I suspect she always thanked God in her prayers even on the extreme outlier bad ones.
Thanks Mamie Jo, for the inspiration and the grit. I love you. We love you.
