If you're interested in how menopause might impact brain health, I’d recommend this paper (link in comments) led by Rebecca Thurston, PhD, FAMBR, FAPS. The study looks at whether vasomotor symptoms (like hot flashes) are associated with blood plasma biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

🧠 The study does find an association between nighttime vasomotor occurrences and one AD biomarker, a lower ratio of amyloid β 42/amyloid β 40.

📈 But, its important to emphasise that the size of the effect appears small (see the nearly flat line in the chart) and it doesn’t mean that there is a causal link between more vasomotor symptoms at night and AD.

🛑 There were also several other AD blood plasma biomarkers (phosphorylated tau, neurofilament light, glial fibrillary acidic protein) that did not appear to be associated with vasomotor symptoms.

What’s fantastic to see is work that explores how we can use symptoms women commonly experience as potential early indicators of other chronic health conditions.

We’re also working hard in this area at Vira Health and hope to be able to share more in the New Year!

Fascinating paper (see comments for link) from Yanai Elazar and Allen Institute for AI (AI2) exploring what is actually within the huge datasets used to train LLMs like ChatGPT.

They quantified several known issues around personally identifiable information and benchmark contamination, but I most enjoyed playing with their interactive website which includes a search tool for the prevalence of specific terms (“n-grams”) in the training datasets.

At Vira Health we’re continually evaluating how models like this might impact women’s health, so I ran a small experiment to compare the prevalence of terms associated with women’s versus men’s health.

In the largest C4 dataset: 💡 Prostate cancer (1 in 8 men) is mentioned 1.63mn times whilst menopause (nearly all women) is mentioned 1.76mn times. 💡 Erectile dysfunction gets 1.24mn mentions vs 0.32mn mentions for hot flashes / hot flushes 💡 Viagra is included 10 times more than hormone replacement therapy, raking up a sizeable 2.09mn mentions, more than menopause itself!

This is a neat illustration of the challenge involved in mitigating bias in LLMs given the structural differences in the data currently used for training.

If you’re interested in running evaluations like this at scale please get in touch!
