Since launching AICOR with Ian Pritchard and Small Print Compare with Prageeth Sudusinghe back in January of this year, I’ve had many old friends and ex-colleagues reach out to me, and nearly all have asked what was the motivation for launching each of the respective business ideas?   For Small Print Compare, it’s easy, the idea was too good to ignore. Putting it bluntly, I don’t feel the insurance market is offering a good customer experience at present, with the majority of consumers not really aware of what they are buying. There’s a multi-million-pound funded regulatory board set up to protect consumers, but apparently, they aren’t able to spot what’s blatantly obvious.   For AICOR, the motivation for both myself and Ian has been fuelled from several poor engagements that we’ve both experienced from recruitment agents. Some experiences were better than others, but ultimately it felt like a numbers game, high volume, in and out as quickly as possible, and being made to feel like a commodity rather than a human being! We are hoping that we can do better and take a far more holistic view of both the candidates and the respective business.   However, a common motivation for both businesses, was a desire to create greater autonomy in my working hours. Five years ago, I became a single parent, so I’ve had the challenges of juggling childcare and working. It was hard enough before my separation when we had two of us working together as a team, but balancing a career and looking after children on your own is challenging. Becoming my own boss, has given me the flexibility to work around my family commitments, allowing me to work longer hours when my children are with their mum, but giving me the time-off when needed to dedicate my full attention to their needs. I’ve been fortunate enough to have been employed by some really understanding companies over that time and it’s by no means a negative reflection on them, but when a school run beckons, or one of my kids feels unwell, you can’t help but feel guilty that you are doing something that you shouldn’t.   This nicely leads me on to last week, when myself and Ian had the pleasure of meeting with Jessica Heagren the founder of Careers After Babies. Jessica is on a mission to help businesses acknowledge their failings in accommodating the needs of parents. I won’t spoil Jessica’s thunder, but it’s definitely worth checking out her site https://lnkd.in/e99JaiAt.

It really resonated with what we’re doing at AICOR, understanding the business, the culture, the management style, and ensuring that candidates are fully aware of what they are signing up to! Aligning expectations is so important, it’s easy to place a candidate in a role, but it's far more challenging to place a candidate in a role in which they are truly happy. Neither myself or Ian are willing to work with companies that we wouldn’t be willing to work for ourselves.

Anyway back to work after 2 weeks off!
