Very excited that NYC is finally implementing a regulatory approach that makes drone flights possible and ensures they are done responsibly.
When we started Dolphin AI, Inc. in 2015, one of the inspirations was the ability to use drones for facade inspections in NYC. We anticipated drones would be used for Local Law 11 inspections, with higher accuracy and safety – keeping more engineers on the ground, not up at heights. We set out to build computer vision models that could handle and analyze all the visual data it would generate.
Given the challenges of operating drones in densely populated cities, we quickly pivoted our focus to AI-based analysis of storm-damaged rooftops for insurance inspections. But it’s exciting to see this finally become possible, and I hope more regulatory bodies will follow in setting smarter rules around drone flights, and recognizing the net improvements in safety they can provide, if done well.
