“You have a special talent; you need to teach people how to pitch like that!”
Our team's hard work paid off, on Day 2, we built a functioning prototype with a landing page with some integrated AI features and a compelling pitch deck.
We had a challenging goal: deliver 12 slides in just 3 minutes.
We were the 18th team to pitch, and as the pitches went on, I could feel my stomach turning from the nerves.
“I’m only nervous because I really care, and that’s a good thing. I got this!”
When our turn came, I made my way to the stage, my heart pounding with each step. I took a deep breath…and exhaled…
“Did you know that there are 22M children in the US from 0-5, but there’s no playbook on early childhood education…”
After I said that sentence, I immediately settled into myself on stage and absolutely flourished. My whole personality shone throughout the pitch as I conveyed our story with emotion, passion, and even injected a bit of humor.
I felt so proud of myself when I finished.
“You have a special talent; you need to teach people how to pitch like that!”
I’ve NEVER received so many compliments from a pitch. Almost everyone I spoke with afterwards told me what an amazing job I did.
I left that night with a renewed sense of confidence and drive to build and share my story on more stages.
Takeaways:
● Go participate in a challenging event; you’ll learn more about yourself than you anticipated. ● Embrace the nerves and use that energy to drive you, they are often present because you deeply care. ● Always record yourself when you’re on stage! The nerves got the best of me here.
Thank you, team, for being amazing, and thank you to the Techstars team for putting on such a phenomenal event. I’m looking forward to many more!

I attended the Techstars Startup Weekend, and it was an event for the books!
This event brought out the best in me by challenging me in many ways. The goal was to build a business in a weekend.
It started with 66 pitches, and you had to receive at least two votes from the attendees to build a team. I received three!
From there, I knew I could build a team, and I got to work.
Assemble a balanced team: ✅ 2 Engineers, 1 Designer, 2 Business Development Leads
Effectively communicate the vision and tasks to each team member ✅
Establish camaraderie within the team ✅
Building relationships within the team was CRUCIAL for me. Throughout the day, I focused on fostering a safe team environment.
Action Steps: ● Learn about everyone’s professional background and why they came to this event so that I could help them achieve their goals. ● Pull out personal stories from each person throughout the day. ● Ensure each person is called on first during different discussions so that everyone’s voice is heard.
The bonding that happened next caught me by surprise.
One of my teammates initially introduced himself as Jay, but once I saw his full name on LinkedIn, I asked which name he preferred, and he told me his full name. So I repeated his name four times until I said it correctly.
In that moment, I saw him begin to smile. He started going by a nickname because people refused to pronounce his name correctly.
Unfortunately, I’ve heard some version of this story from many immigrants in this country. As a native English speaker, the 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 I can do is learn how to say one word well in someone else’s language—their name.
We ended up having a conversation about the history of everyone’s family names on the team.
From that moment on, we were firing on all cylinders.
Always take the time to learn how to pronounce someone’s name correctly—it matters.
