One of our big inspirations was Howard Behar, and his ideas captured in his book "It's Not About the Coffee: Lessons on Putting People First from a Life at Starbucks" (link below) that he also generously shared with me when I started building out my concepts behind Careteam. THANK YOU Howard!!!

Mr. Behar was President of North America and he became the founding President of Starbucks International, opening the very first store outside of North America in Japan. During his tenure, he participated in the growth of the company from only 28 stores to over 15,000 stores spanning five continents. He served on the Starbucks Board of Directors for twelve years before retiring.

#PSA as a physician who loves prevention, and please share: The message that cycling/ scooter helmets are important has landed (GOOD), but clearly not how to properly wear them, so they actually do their job (NOT GREAT). I see too many cyclists with headgear that is just decorative, when they think it's safe.

WHY WEAR HELMETS? (if you still need some convincing) 🧠 Helmet use reduces the risk of head injury by 85%, brain injury by 88% and severe brain injury by at least 75%. 🧠 The protective effect of helmets for facial injury is 65% for the upper and mid facial regions. 🧠 Concussion occurs in 90% of cycling head injuries without a helmet.

2-V-1 is the mnemonic for the 3 most common issues in how helmets are applied, please see image below 2- Two fingers above your eyebrows: The helmet should cover the top of the forehead and should rest about two fingers' width above the eyebrows. V - Straps form a V right under your ears. THIS IS THE MOST COMMON ISSUE. 1 - Place one finger between the helmet's strap and the chin.

Also remember helmets need to be changed: 🚴 after an accident as they may look ok but be no longer effective, 🚴 every 5 years, according to the safety regulators at the Snell Foundation Inc.

I also get asked a lot: is it worth investing in a MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) - I would say it's a no brainer (pun intended) for mountain bike cyclists and heavy road cyclists. If you are casual/ bike lane user, probably a regular helmet is good enough, but it is your head after all...  MIPS are said to be about 10% better at dissipating the rotational forces of an impact.

Thank you to the National Safety Council, HUB Cycling, Doctors of BC Council on Health Promotion, CAA and many others who do great awareness raising.
