Highlights
Some color on what will happen next with SVB (not financial or legal advice).
If your deposits are FDIC-insured, you will receive up to the insured amount from the FDIC. Per the press release, this will occur on Monday.
If your deposits are not insured or for amounts above the $250,000 of FDIC insurance, you are now a creditor to the SVB estate. The good news is that you’re almost first inline to receive proceeds from the liquidation (ahead of the bank’s corporate debt, preferred and common equity, but behind FDIC administrative expenses & a few other small-ish things). In practice, this means the bank is going to start fire selling its assets (the loans it holds). As a creditor to the estate, you will receive a “Receivership Certificate”, this represents your claim on the SVB estate. As the bank sells down its assets, you will receive distributions of cash on a pro rata basis with other deposit holders with claims. This process can take 6-12 months.
The simple math here is (in round numbers) - the company has $211bn of tangible assets and $173bn of deposits. This means that as long as they can sell their assets for greater than ~80c on the dollar ([$173bn – TBD admin expenses – TBD some other things]/$211bn), you will receive all your uninsured deposits back. Is ~80c the right number?
The bank just sold a portion of its fixed rate securities (its most interest rate sensitive) for ~90c on the dollar. Its other assets are less liquid (i.e., loans to start ups, real estate) and may take longer / require greater discounts on sale to other banks / funds.
There will likely be trading in the certificates that you are issued, meaning you may be able to find liquidity for your deposit claims. This will likely, however, be at a discount to what you may ultimately recover.
