Ever asked a question in a workshop and got dead silence? Everyone's too shy or timid to speak up.

It sucks, right?

But... I’ve got a solution:

"Catch the Mic."

It's part of my workshop design pattern library. These patterns are simple collaborative mechanisms that you can drop into any workshop.

Instead of a boring talking stick, you’ve got a throwable mic.

Here’s how it works:

When someone’s done talking, They throw the mic to someone else, Who then has to speak.

You can go low-tech with a crumpled piece of paper, Or high-tech with a throwable mic like the "CatchBox."

Why do I love this?

I (the facilitator) don’t have to pick who talks! And that makes all the difference.

Bonus?

It's FUN... You better not do it with glasses on the tables!

Next week, I’ll share another workshop design pattern called "Rounds of Discussions."

PS: Notice a pattern (ha ha) in the patterns I love? They always have a "serious" benefit with a "fun" twist.

Here is a powerful method that works for any workshop. The best part? No prep is needed.

I've called it the ColCard method.

A REAL-LIFE EXAMPLE

Yesterday, I was working on Lead Magnets to attract new clients for my facilitation agency.

Lead magnets are resources you offer potential clients in exchange for their email addresses.

A DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE 5-STEP PROCESS

If you're looking for a fancy method...  This might disappoint!

The idea board? Just columns. The process? Just 5 steps.

Step 1: Define What a Card Is

An idea, a cause, a risk... For me: a Lead Magnet Idea.

Step 2: Define What a Column Is

A topic, a challenge, a cause... For me: User Pains.

Step 3: Brainstorm Columns

Example: "GenAI is overwhelming, I don't know where to start."

Step 4: Brainstorm Cards

Example: "A free 30-minute remote workshop to kickstart your GenAI strategy."

Step 5: If needed, go back to step 3 or even step 2.

NO PREP NEEDED!

Design decisions happens in steps 1 and 2. Deciding what a card and a column are is essentially designing your workshop.

SIMPLE IS NOT SIMPLISTIC

🟢If you think it is simple, you are right. 🔴If you think it is simplistic, think again!

Step 2 is where the magic happens. The columns are the lenses through which you view the problem.

⚠️Picking the right columns is YOUR biggest challenge.

A poor choice of columns? --> little creativity and weak solutions.

WANT MORE? COLCARD POWER-UPS

It's easy to extend ColCard.

My favorite power-ups: Triggers!

  • During step 2, choose a second option for what a column could be. For me: "Lead Magnet Categories".
  • Then use them as idea triggers in step 4 (see photo, the trigger was "free workshops").

WHAT'S NEXT? TRY IT!

Try the ColCard method on your next task. You'll see firsthand how tricky step 2 can be.

A whiteboard is overkill for ColCard. Stormz is easier for your participants. And has specific features for it! Try it: https://lnkd.in/eMzHy87c
