Alexis Merculief

PhD Student, Human Development and Family Studies Oregon State University

Alexis Merculief is an Aleut tribal member and a former PhD student in Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS) at Oregon State University.14 Her research focuses on how environmental factors influence cognitive development, particularly executive function, in early and middle childhood. She is especially interested in promoting resilience and long-term health among children from underserved populations, including American Indian and Alaska Native communities.1

During her time at Oregon State University, Alexis served as an Instructor and Graduate Research Assistant.2 Her doctoral research examined risk and protective factors in the built and social environment that affect childhood cognition for children from underserved racial/ethnic backgrounds.1

Alexis has a background in psychology and previously worked for four years at a community-based organization serving American Indian and Alaska Native people.1 She chose Oregon State's HDFS PhD program for its supportive environment and emphasis on understanding the importance of context in human development.14

Since completing her PhD, Alexis has moved on to a postdoctoral position at the Stanford Center on Early Childhood.35 Her career goals include continuing research on community and cultural resilience in underserved communities and mentoring students from these backgrounds as a university professor.1
