The Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guideline defines chronic kidney disease (CKD) as abnormal kidney structure or function present for >3 months, with implications for health. However, CKD in heart failure (HF) has not been previously defined using KDGIO criteria. Data necessary for KDIGO criteria was not available in four out of ten patients, and CKD could not be defined in three out of ten patients with data. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to define CKD using KDIGO criteria in HF that provide best estimates of the true prevalence of CKD in HF and true risk of death and HF hospitalization associated with CKD. Future studies need to examine whether patients with CKD defined using a single eGFR in routine clinical practice are characteristically and prognostically different from those with CKD defined using KDIGO criteria.
