Highlights
I’ve been to many joyful farewell bashes but last week’s took the cake. Eight years ago, Jane Harrison started the first (and only) First Nations writer’s festival Blak & Bright. On a shoe-string budget, she was driven by a passion and determination to provide a way for First Nation’s people to tell their stories. And what a success. Today that festival, housed at the #WheelerCentre has multi-year funding, is highly regarded among First Nations writers’ festivals internationally and now Jane has passed on the CEO and Artistic Director baton to the award-winning author Bebe Oliver. At her farewell at the Wheeler Centre last week, people lined up to talk about her significant impact on First Nation’s people, the arts and the literary eco-system. The Hon Colin Brooks, Minister for Creative Industries, said Jane’s leadership of Blak & Bright has showcased “incredible talent” and helped place First Nation's stories and voices in their rightful place at the front and centre of our literary landscape. And the wonderful Sandra Phillips (PhD) Phillips, Associate Dean, Indigenous and Professor of Publishing and Communications at University of Melbourne, described how Jane changed the ecosystem and catalyzed people’s careers, making an “immeasurable contribution”. As she points out, Jane didn’t just provide the platform but had a nose for identifying talent, helping people develop their skills (often through masterclasses), building confidence, connections and opportunities. Others spoke about her sheer persistence and doggedness and how much her encouragement, wisdom and warmth meant to emerging writers. And Jane, a descendent of the Muruwari people around Bourke and Brewarrina in NSW, did all this while a leading First Nations playwright, author, curator and essayist – and doing her Masters (Arts) at QUT. Many of you will have seen her ground-breaking work including the play Stolen, Rainbow’s End and The Visitors which have won many awards, toured internationally and on the school syllabus for decades. Last year The Visitors was also made into an opera and book and the play will certainly be on again hopefully at the Melbourne Theatre Company after the Sydney Theatre Company's successful production last year at the Sydney Opera House. So there was a lot to celebrate and as one who has witnessed Jane’s journey and contribution for more than 40 years, I could not be more proud of my brilliant friend. Best work today going to University of Melbourne to work with leaders and academics on how to use leadership communications to build impact. I was so impressed. Every one of the people attending today is doing hugely significant work that is changing people’s lives and building a sustainable future. Hats off to you all. May your work be shared more widely and change things faster! And so good catching up with experts Olivia Gumienny + LINGHANG KONG and shooting the breeze on all things social. #leadershipcommunications #socialmedia
