My brother completed a half marathon this weekend. While running 13 miles is quite impressive, I couldn’t help but also be impress by the organizer’s effort to reduce waste. As a runner myself, I am well aware (and disappointed) by the amount of cups disposed of along race courses and often times not in the trash cans. The organizers of this race in Santa Clarita had provided these silicone collapsible cups with finger holder to runners and water dispensers with foot pedal along the course. Yes, this was a small scale race and may be more difficult to scale up. But I love to see innovative solutions to reduce waste. Hopefully, I start seeing more and more of these in races.

Happy to share that at last night’s Council meeting, Council adopted the next version of City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan. This plan will help guide future policies and programs for years to come. The adoption of the SCP comes just a few days after Council unanimously adopted Sustainable and Connected Community as a Council priority.
