Amelia Johns

Senior Lecturer in Digital and Social Media

Amelia Johns is a prominent figure in the fields of digital media studies, cultural studies, and youth studies with a focus on issues of whiteness, youth identity, and migrant and diaspora youth negotiations on racism and citizenship in digitally networked spaces.

Her current research centers on exploring Malaysian-Chinese youth digital practices and how 'the digital' influences political participation, citizenship, and a sense of belonging.

Amelia is the author of 'Battle for the Flag' (2015), a study investigating youth expressions of racism, nationalism, and whiteness during the Cronulla riots of 2005. She is also a co-editor of the recently published book 'Negotiating digital Citizenship: Control, Contest, Culture' (2016), which she worked on with Anthony McCosker and Son Vivienne.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Cultural Studies from the University of Melbourne and has held various academic positions, including Senior Lecturer at UTS School of Communication, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Research Fellow at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Research Officer at Victoria University, Media tutor/Research Assistant at Swinburne University of Technology, and Tutor at the University of Melbourne.
