At a team summer party in 2019 we started talking about writing compilers. I had always wanted to make my own programming language - not because the world needed it, but because it seemed like fun and challenging. However, after this party, I thought: Let's give it a shot! So I started by trying to make something simple first; a parser that could parse a namespace block, a class, some properties, functions and so on. Parsing actual code followed quickly and after a few months I actually had something - a proof of concept. I had an early version of a programming language (and runtime) that supported namespaces, classes, inheritance, functions, async/suspend functions, ARC (automatic reference counting), generics, "native functions" (that you can implement in C langage) and more. Fast forward to 2024, it also has lambda expressions, GC (garbage collection) combined with ARC, interfaces. When you build the code, it ends up with native machine code (not bytecode).

I've made frameworks that are in an early stage, but resembles .NET Framework or J2SE. The language itself is inspired by languages like Kotlin, TypeScript and Swift. Some classes from the frameworks include String, Byte, UByte, Short, UShort, Int, UInt, Long, ULong, Bool, Float, Double, Date, HashMap, HashSet, List, File, Stream, FileStream, BinaryStream, Socket, SslSocket and more. Other frameworks in progress are various game and application frameworks (general UI framework with views and layouts, 2D graphics framework, 3D graphics framework, image framework (for loading PNG's and other formats)).

I don't have any professional ambition with this language, which is why my main focus is to get this compatible with ancient retro platforms, mainly the 680x0 based Amiga computers. I love this computer and strongly believe that my language can be used to make some kick-ass software for it. I've attached a video of my web IDE, which is currently in prototype stage. The video shows how one can easily manage code files a project, build the project and run the built program in an emulator. All in the web browser. I'm also adding a link toa video (https://lnkd.in/dmg9_iCf) showing the built program run in the emulator. The program runs from a simulated floppy disk. It opens up a window and lists all the files and folders on the disk. When you click on a folder, it will show the content of that folder, and so on.

The compiler doesn't use LVVM or anything like that. My target platforms aren't supported by LVVM. Instead it generates C code that can be compiled with GCC for any platform that GCC supports. The code allows the coder to write native functions, so that you could have one implementation for Linux and one implementation for AmigaOS - or whatever.

A bit crazy? I know.

I solve problems! Noen som har en reell utfordring? :)
