OK, André, you convinced me. With only 62 casualties (Chernobyl, rescue workers) nuclear is by far the safest energy source we have. Clear. But Why? Please explain:
1️⃣ Energy density. There’s very little fuel in the reactor. Lowest input, highest output. Hence, very little escapes should something go wrong. 2️⃣ Homeostasis. Negative feedback loops ensure that an uncontrolled chain reaction can never occur. It’s the same mechanism that keeps our body at 37 Degrees Celsius. This is straightforward engineering, no rocket science. 3️⃣ Defense in depth. Multiple engineered barriers, the outer one being the concrete dome, ensure that nothing escapes. TMI was the perfect example. Chernobyl was a flawed design and Fukushima, an old reactor hit by a tsunami, had no concrete dome. Yet, the fuel remained inside and the external radiation was harmless.
So, here’s the learning:
Nothing in life is to be feared. It only is to be understood. Nuclear is the best we have. We know this since 60 years. Nuclear provides the largest output with the smallest input and the smallest footprint. Nuclear saves lives, saves space, saves natural resources, saves critical resources, saves the environment, saves the climate, saves nature, and saves the economy. This is not an opinion. This is science.
