This one hit close to home on so many levels. Thank you to Olivia Munn for trusting me with your story, for opening up about it all, from your most vulnerable moments through four surgeries, including a double mastectomy, to the source of your strength and your joy. Your bravery has created a watershed moment.

Like Olivia Munn, I had no idea what a lifetime breast cancer risk score was, or what to do with that information once I had it. I didn’t know I should have been getting MRIs for years. I didn’t know there was a free tool you can use to determine if you are high risk for breast cancer, that helps convince doctors to take you seriously to order scans like MRIs - and that if they order them correctly, those scans are typically covered by insurance. This story is about how to be your own advocate. This story is about prevention.

I asked Olivia’s ob-gyn Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi (who found her breast cancer and co-hosts the SHE MD podcast, which is excellent) if her methods were considered aggressive. “You can only call someone aggressive for ordering tests when the woman in discussion is not your sister, your daughter, your mother, or your wife,” she replied. “How do you draw that line?”

I lost my best friend at USA TODAY, the great Olivia Barker, to breast cancer discovered at stage 3. She fought valiantly for four years and died at 40. I think about her constantly, and she looked over my shoulder as I wrote this story. How I wish I knew before this cover story that you don’t have to just pray you’re not in the 20% of cancer missed by mammograms. You can actually find out if you’re high risk using a free 5-minute Tyrer-Cuzick risk assessment test and then demand additional MRIs, which help catch it early. Prevention. PREVENTION! This story is dedicated to all the women in my life. And all the women in yours.

Catching my breath - and catching up! What a gift to spend time with Angela Bassett - to revisit her work through the years, to hear her reflections on a long marriage that began at 39 and how she’s taught her teenage twins her life lessons through action…no one could have deserved an honorary Oscar in January more.
