Highlights
Thanks to HFL Education for inviting me to speak on their panel for the Teacher Encounters event last week. Educating the next generation of developers clearly still has a way to go if the UK is truly to maintain its reputation for being the home of technology innovation.
It's all too easy to think that we're contributing to this agenda by teaching kids how to put a border round text and change the font to Comic Sans, but that's only equipping the next generation of HR professionals. IT skills are not the same as coding skills and more than thirty years after I was at school, that's a lesson that has yet to be learned.
Why don't maths teachers know that teaching trigonometry and matrices will lead to knowledge that can lead to careers in 3D computer graphics ? How are we inspiring the next generation to know that those boring dot products will put them on a path to developing the next Fortnite ? Clearly they won't because I understand that matrices aren't even on the National Curriculum any more!
A lot of emphasis is put on the "three Rs", but it's a gross oversimplification to think that this is enough to empower our future workforce alone.

Thank you to the Barclays team (in particular to Rachel Budge, Stephen Ainsworth and Tamsin Dye) for letting me out of the starting gate at Newmarket to give them a gentle introduction to AI (alternative title: "Why killer robots aren’t going to take over the earth -yet!"). The session was aimed at giving a not-so-scary explanation of what AI actually is, what it isn't and how it can be used for them and indeed their clients.
Aside from the obvious highlight of the fire alarm going off, the "is it AI or not ?" quiz seemed to go down well for those present 😀
