When Bill Rouselle spoke in a meeting—which he tended to do after making sure everyone else had already been heard—people sat up and listened. That had something to do with his obvious wisdom, shaped by decades of experience in politics, civil rights, and crisis management, but there was more to it than that. Bill had the ability to absorb a range of ideas and opinions—clashing opinions—and discern the unifying solution no one else could see. That's never an easy task, but in the pressure cooker of a political campaign, it's an extraordinary skill. Bill also never hesitated to put up his hand to do the work. In our line of business, that often means the first draft of an article or script. A small thing, you might think, but Bill had a bigger goal: creating a culture of diligence, collegiality, and hard work. When a leader shows those traits, the team follows suit. It's been a minute since I posted here...but like many others I have felt myself whipsawed by artificial intelligence: thrilled by its practical benefits, terrified by its existential risks. Those feelings led to a thought experiment: if I were a leader of government or an AI company, what would I do to grapple with the pressing, elusive, morally fraught issues surrounding AI? How would I process my thoughts?
That's the backstory for this article. It strikes me that a blend of bedrock American principles and longstanding spiritual practices are a good starting point for answering those questions. I hope you'll take a look and let me know your thoughts.
