I may just be in a pathologically good mood, or perhaps it’s because I’m watching it on a plane—somehow the place, other than the theater, where I most deeply enjoy films—but I believe American Fiction is the best movie I’ve seen since Parasite.

Brilliant AF :) https://lnkd.in/e5qkDaTj

It didn’t win Best Picture, and Jeffrey Wright didn’t win Best Actor.

Parasite did win Best Picture, and it’s not an American film, nor is it in English.

Maybe that shouldn’t matter, but historically, it has, and I think it actually should.

Maybe I love it, and Wright, so much because I’ve seen him a few times in NYC, even rode in an elevator with him once in Dumbo.

Or maybe it’s because Basquiat was directed by the father of a friend of mine—a friend I went to school with from pre-K through high school.

Basquiat was also about my neighborhood during the first decade of my life, and it came out when I was in high school.

You can even see one of my AGES tags in the scene where Basquiat walks down Crosby Street with Warhol.

Or maybe it’s because I once planned to be a novelist before realizing it would likely mean being poor, and that I hated being alone.

Either way, I understand Oppenheimer was a great film—I even saw it in IMAX.

As a father of three, I don’t get to go to movies for grown-ups (I almost wrote “Adult Films” before backspacing) much, if ever.

But Mike Annunziata had the very cool idea of taking me, Michael Bloch, Michelle V. and Jones Thomas and a few other folks, to the movie as an Also Capital outing.

It certainly was a film about Hard Tech.

The event was even more fun because it was during the Barbenheimer cultural phenomenon.

And I LOVED Oppenheimer.

I just loved American Fiction more.

I think American Fiction should have won the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (International Emmy Awards) for Best Picture, and Jeffrey Wright should have won Best Actor.

I haven’t seen Brendan Fraser in The Whale (now I feel like I need to), but still. The argument I’ll now propose is actually a core theme of American Fiction:

Some awards, like the Academy Awards, should judge a film both on its artistic merit and its importance to American Culture (with capital A and C).

Sure, the topic of Oppenheimer was important to American Culture, but not contemporary American culture.

Maybe when my father ducked under his desk because of bomb scare drills, or if most present-day Americans understood that we’re in more danger now from nuclear annihilation than ever before—but they don’t.

Racial identity, particularly the relationship between Black and White Americans, is a defining feature of the current zeitgeist (far more than it should be, in my opinion, and in the opinion of Wright’s character in the film).

American Fiction is the smartest take on this topic I’ve seen, read, or heard—while being hilarious and so touching that it brought me to tears twice.

Anyhow, you should watch it. It’s great AF. :)
