We went to see a show last night as part of Melbourne’s International Comedy Festival. There were only 5 people there and one of them was the act. It was a tad awkward and we briefly considered a swift exit stage left (as did he!). But to his credit, Josh went on and delivered an hour of laughs and entertaining stories. It wasn’t the best act I’ve ever seen, certainly not the worst but definitely the one I felt most invested in. If we didn’t laugh, who would? It got me thinking though. We all have tough weeks at work. Things may not go our way or land as we hoped. We can get despondent or lose confidence and it can be easy to wallow in the disappointment . But as Josh proved last night, the show must go on! Turning up is half the battle and pushing through, when all you want to do is retreat, makes the world of difference. I am sure it wasn't easy but he took a breath, dug deep and braved it. All kudos to him and I’ll borrow some of that courage as I head into next week. Looking forward to his sold out shows at the Palais next year...(although plenty of tickets still available this year if you need a chuckle 😂 )
HR for 2024
Having just read through Josh Bersin's HR predictions for 2024 I have to say it filled me with joy. There is still so much to be done! AI being the dominant influence on the function as it promises to streamline or eliminate arduous tasks, allowing for the elevation of truly valuable activities - leadership development, talent mobilisation, org design, pay equity, employee experience and workplace harmonisation.
He predicts a complete resdesign of the HR function as well as the building of new capability within the discipline. (Remember we now have Workplace Specialists and Ways of Working Gurus).
To most people in HR this won't come as a surprise. The most fascinating thing about HR is that it isn't a finished product. It must constantly evolve in response to organisational, economic, environmental and societal change.
As recruiters in the field, this ever changing, always striving, re-inventing approach, keeps us challenged - in a good way. We need to be identifying talent ahead of the curve and discovering where new skills are being cultivated. This is our commitment to our market.
