Ann Greenberg: A Visionary in Interactive Media and Storytelling
Ann Greenberg is a trailblazer in the realms of architecture, film, and immersive interactive media, boasting an impressive career that spans decades. Her journey began with a focus on storytelling as a spatial experience, which she first encountered when she saw motion capture technology in 1988. Since that pivotal moment, Ann has maintained that "VR is heaven, and blockchain is earth, AI is how we talk between them," an eloquent encapsulation of her beliefs about the interconnectedness of technology and storytelling.
Professional Background
In 1992, Ann co-founded ION, a groundbreaking studio that has been heralded as a 'studio of the future' dedicated to "omnidirectional," interactive, immersive, and co-created media. ION achieved remarkable success and earned the distinction of being the first Interactive Music Label when it formed a joint venture with BMG. This collaboration led to the launch of an innovative product featuring the legendary artist David Bowie, utilizing Ann's pioneering interactive cinema systems and patented technologies. Under her leadership, ION designed, built, and published a series of award-winning media products, collaborating with renowned artists such as Brian Eno, The Residents, and Ray Zone, a pioneer in 3D. Ann's insights into early immersion techniques led to the development of physics engines like DaveVR, interactive cinema systems, and products that were shipped with anaglyphic glasses.
Additionally, Ann contributed to the evolution of the internet and digital media with her invention of early web streaming, musician-hosted chats, and the development of CDKey, which laid the groundwork for modern NFTs through its hash-based latent identification and synchronization systems for online entertainment. Her visionary spirit also gave rise to the 1st intelligent media player, marking a significant milestone in the technological landscape of interactive media.
In 1998, Ann's entrepreneurial journey took another leap when she co-founded Gracenote, the world's first crowdsourced company that specialized in metadata and Automatic Content Recognition. Gracenote has since become an industry leader, integrated into over a billion consumer electronics, software, and automotive devices worldwide. In recognition of its tremendous value and market presence, Gracenote was acquired by Nielsen for an impressive $560 million. A significant aspect of Ann's foresight included prioritizing consumer privacy, ensuring that the software could accurately track playback of movies, television, and music without infringing on user rights. This commitment has helped establish the Content ID standard that remains in use today.
Currently, Ann serves as the founder and CEO of Sceneplay, Inc., also branded as Entertainment AI™, which she founded in 2006. Sceneplay focuses on automating collaborative storytelling, enabling users to co-create engaging narratives through a SmartScript™. This innovative system doubles as a Smart Contract, facilitating fair compensation for contributors via its "MicroCash" model. Entertainment AI spans a diverse range of mediums, including live-action, avatars, 3D animations, animatronics, and even robotic storytelling, highlighting Ann's commitment to expanding the possibilities of interactive storytelling.
Furthermore, Ann coined the terms "Social Video" and "Proof of Participation," both of which reflect her advocacy for a thriving Creator Economy. Her influential series, Human-Centered Storytelling™, explores the fundamental shifts from third-person to first-person storytelling, with implications across various fields such as entertainment, medicine, and education.
