Friday ponderings… reading is listening
Listening has come up often this past week. Be it someone’s request for books to promote better listening as a leader or an engineer’s emotional exhaustion from a two hour conversation with a peer. The peer just wouldn’t listen and accept the facts as presented to them and kept asking for support from the wrong team of engineers.
Yes engineers need to improve their listening. And I contend that reading is a form of listening and engineers could do better especially when responding to an email. My recent experience with a colleague’s response to my email highlighted this need.
They didn’t take the time to fully understand my request and responded answering a different question. And while useful information I had to send 2 more emails to achieve clarity wrt my question. If we resided in the same building I would have walked to their desk. And if it wasn’t such a minor low priority request, I would have picked up the phone.
It was a simple question clarifying if they would be responsible for generating an output. But they ‘skimmed’ it and saw ‘this needs to be generated’ and assumed I asked for ‘how to generate.’ Their unnecessary sense of urgency overrode a more patient read.
Over 3 decades ago a professor recommended ha I read technical content 3 times. He observed ha m responses and questions in class showed I lightly understood what I read. Since then, I read technical content 3 times.
For emails I read at least twice and determine if a response is even needed. I’ve become more judicious in my responses. I may start tribute writing and then wait till end of day to finish the response. Allows me more time to consider my response.
Listening is the highest form of attention. When it comes to responding to an email from another engineer read it slowly or read it twice Because this too is listening and hence a form of attention.

Another week of focused work so it's a Friday late morning session at Holly Rose Coffee Bar. my usual their signature drink the Rose Mocha. I bring my own ceramic cup to enjoy a 16 oz size.
IEEE P2427 draft readiness for second round of ballot has consumed at least 50% of my effort for these past two weeks. As working group we're walking the last mile.
