Highlights
As an editor both digital and on newspapers, I had one credo: content is king. Good timely content, well told would bring readers back. Social media could help boost readership but I didn’t like to be held hostage to it.
Fortunately, I attended a talk by Kevin Anderson, FRSA who warned of the dangers of relying on social media (Facebook).
News is an expensive commodity, so you need great, well written, evergreen content (which can and should be regularly updated to get maximum views for use minimum resource) to make page one of Google - some of that content is still there today. I called them my iceberg stories, you saw big hits when first published but over the months and years they continued to accumulate viewers, not enough to make the top 10 of Chartbeat but enough to tick along.
I must be one of the few editors to put sales on newsprint and viewers on digital with more than i inherited. But was always told i was doing it wrong.
