My first company was a total failure, but it turned out to be the best learning experience I’ve ever had.

Back in 2017, I took a shot and co-founded my first company with two friends: a Takeaway Craft Beer Store.

Here are 3 reasons why it failed:

  • Lack of Product-Market Fit: Even though craft beer was booming at the time, people preferred going out to a bar rather than taking it home.

  • Poor Delegation: I handed off most of the operations to my employees—big mistake. I barely interacted with our customers, which meant I missed out on key insights that could’ve helped pivot the business. Hint: No real business thrives on a few hours of work a week.

  • Lack of Passion: I wasn’t really into craft beer. Sure, I liked going out for a drink, but it wasn’t something I was passionate about.

What it taught me:

  • Resilience: Starting a business is tough. Most of the time, you’re just fighting to keep it alive. We managed to do that for 3 years until Covid hit and we had to let it go.

  • Frugality: We had a tight budget but we were determined to make it work, so we got creative and made the most of what we had.

  • Brand Building: This was key. We put a lot of effort into building a strong brand, and it showed. We sold the business in 2020, and it’s still running today under the same brand.

I don’t regret a single moment of the experiences and lessons this journey gave me. So yeah, roll up your sleeves and get started on that business. There are no failures—only learnings.

ps: a few pics of the store and my co-founders (and yes, we’re still close friends! ❤️ )
